Zamboanga del Norte’s Very Own “Tatay Gani” Receives UP Alumni Award on Good Governance

Third District of Zamboanga del Norte’s Representative Isagani “Tatay Gani” S. Amatong, was recognized by his alma mater, the University of the Philippines, during the awarding of its Outstanding Alumni held over the weekend.
The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) Distinguished Alumni Awards, which recognizes individuals for their outstanding achievements in their respective fields, was held last June 21 at the UP Diliman Campus.
Amatong AB ’64; MBA ’70; was honoured for this work in the field government service, together with Architect Gerardo A. I Esquivel, BS Arch ’82.awardee
Atty. Amatong was governor of Zamboanga del Norte for 15 years: as OIC in 1986-1988 and elected for four terms in 1988-1992; 1992-1995; 1998-2001 and 2001-2004. An exemplar of integrity, honesty and dedication, his no-nonsense approach to public works and other projects minimized, if not entirely eradicated corruption.
“Tatay Gani” as fondly called by his constituents is a certified action man. His outstanding performance as governor earned him various recognition and award, including commendation by Philippine Graphics in 1995 as one of the Top Ten Local Chief Executives in the Philippine Free Press in 1998 as Outstanding Governor. He was also recognized as “Most Outstanding Governor of the Philippines” by the DSWD during the 6th National Social Welfare and Development Forum in October 2002, and “Outstanding Provincial Governor” by the Local Government Leadership Award, Senate of the Philippines in 2002.
Now back in action as a first termer congressman, Tatay Gani vows to continue the crusade against corruption through improvement of moral standards, poverty alleviation and leadership by example.
Being quite the inspiration, public servants may bear in mind the words of our beloved Tatay Gani- “Ang buhat and pasultihon, dili and sulti ang pabohaton”. (MINDANAO OBSERVER)
